Introduction/Bio

Michael has served as the Superintendent of the Deerfield Public Schools, in Deerfield, Illinois, for the past 3 years.  Prior to his Superintendency at Deerfield, he served as Superintendent with the Pennoyer School District #79, in Norridge,  Illinois, for several years.  In addition, Michael has worked as an adjunct professor, advisor, and supervisor at Chicago-area Universities in the Department of Educational Leadership.

A public school educator and leader for nearly 25 years, Michael has served as an assistant superintendent, a middle school associate principal, a principal, and a middle school teacher, teaching social studies, reading, and civics.  He earned his doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction, allowing him to test theories of learning in action.  Michael was a Bammy Award Superintendent finalist, which is a cross-discipline honor that identifies and acknowledges the extraordinary work being done across the entire education field, every day.

Michael was also honored as one of three finalists for the 2015 National Association of School Superintendents superintendent of the year award.  He is the co-moderator of #suptchat, a Twitter driven conversation that takes place the first Wednesday of every month at 7PM, along with our previous guest, Nick Polyak, Superintendent of Leyden High School District.

About The Conversation

Michael is a career educator, born and raised in the Chicago area.  Having served as teacher, site, and central office administrator, he has developed an appreciation for the rigors of each role.  In addition, the coaching and mentoring he received along the way have contributed to his professional development.

Technology has been an important part of his work, and has leveraged it in the development of a district wide STEAM initiative, which brought support and patronage from all stakeholder groups.

      The 4-Pillars:

  • Scholarship: Michael sees himself as a life-long learner, and has modeled it and shared it in his every day work.  He has completed 2 leadership programs beyond his doctoral studies, and has obtained National Superintendent Certification.
  • Leadership: The "5 Exemplary Practices", as described by James Kouzes and Barry Posner in The Leadership Challenge, inspire Michael.  He demonstrates those Practices in his leadership role.
  • Agency:  Obtaining real feedback from teachers, students, and parents is critical to giving voice to those he serves.  More importantly, Michael believes it is a vehicle by which to create opportunities for engagement and collaboration.

Episode 013: Michael Lubelfeld, Ed.D.

"In that school system, Luis, I was the superintendent, and the entire central office. It was me, the principal of the prek - 8 school, and we had 3 administrative assistants.  And we were the administration, together with the bookkeeper.  So, I learned all about tax levies... bonds...facilities... It was pretty cool."
